The reserve is a protected area since 1948 and up to date it has received international recognition in 2 conventions (Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage and Ramsar Convention of Wetlands) and 3 international programs ("Man and Biosphere", "Important Bird Areas" and "Corine biotopes"). It extends in an area of 902.1 ha (the Reserve), and 600 ha (the Ramsar site). “Srebarna” Nature reserve includes the nature around the lake “Srebarna” and the natural-science museum, adjacent to the reservation. There is a possibility to monitor the birds and the thorough nature of the region from the museum. In the heart of the marsh where pelicans nest a video camera is mounted and a video link through pictures and sounds are transmitted to a display in the museum.
The diversity of birds is greatest here. The total number of species found in and around the “Srebarna” Nature reserve is over 223. It is a major stop on the so-called Via Pontica, the most important migration corridor for migratory birds between North Europe and Central Africa. There are found 50 species of birds included in the Red Book. The only colony in the country of 200 Dalmatian pelican nests is in the lake. Besides it, there are two more globally threatened species that nest there - Pygmy Cormorant and Ferruginous Duck. 11 rare and endangered of extinction plant species can be found in the Reserve.
