The colony of rock monasteries of the early Christian era are located around Durostorum-Drustar-Silistra. South-east from Silistra along the bed of Suha River south of the village of Golesh begins the colony of rock monastery. It includes 7 monasteries with plenty of churches, crypts, cells and chapels that have kept its original interior and exterior of the period of late antiquity and early Byzantium. This is proved to be one of the earliest rock monasteries not only in Bulgaria or on the Balkans, but perhaps even in Europe. Colonies of rock monasteries was left during the Pechenezhkite invasions in the mid-eleventh century. Their inhabitants have moved to the south and west, where they put the start of the new monastic colonies along the Provadiyska River, Beli River, Cherni and Rusenski Lom.
