The joke usually being that people who joined the army did so because they werent hardcore enough to be the super badass marines. While trying to search for the original debate, I discovered that U.S. Marines are jokingly known as crayon eaters / munchers amongst US forces - maybe he's heard this and didn't realise it's just a joke. Maybe he thinks that by chowing down on a pack of Crayolas during a debate, people with think he's "Marine Hard". I don't know.It's a joke on them being dumb.
