Protected Area „Pozharevski ostrovi“ is situated along the Danube river from the 424 to 423 km. It comprises of the “Malak Pozharevo” island and the eastern part of “Golyam Pozharevo” island. The islands are forested with trees on an area of 71 ha. The main habitat of the island is a forest of willow and white poplar with a rich under growing vegetation. The island is annually swept over by the Danube, most often in the period from February to April. The Pozharevo island is of global improtance as a breeding site of globally threatened pygmy cormorant. Here is located one of the five largest mixed colonies of night herons and squacco herons in the country. In winter on the island can be regularly met two endangered species - Dalmatian pelican and Red-breasted goose. It has an international importance for wintering and some other species of Waterfowl, Great Cormorant and Grey Goose.
