Memorial complex „Military tomb 1916” is the largest military cemetery from the wars for national unification of the territory of Bulgaria.
On September 5th and 6th 1916, the Tutrakan fortress, considered till then impregnable, was conquered after a powerful artillery preparation and attack from the third Bulgarian army. Nearly 8,000 people were killed in the fighting - Romanians, Bulgarians, Germans and Turks. Immediately after the battle, the Memorial Complex „Military Tomb – 1916“ was built, ossuary of nearly 8,000 soldiers of different nationalities. A monument was built in 1922 - an obelisk preserved until today, on which in Bulgarian, Romanian, German and Turkish language is written "Honor and glory to those who have died heroically for their homeland"
